# GitIgnore

GitIgnore v2.0.0 — a developer toolkit for managing gitignore patterns and rules from the command line. Log checks, validations, template generations, lint results, diffs, and fixes for `.gitignore` files. Each entry is timestamped and persisted locally. Works entirely offline — your data never leaves your machine.

Why GitIgnore?

  • Works entirely offline — your data never leaves your machine
  • Simple command-line interface with no GUI dependency
  • Export to JSON, CSV, or plain text at any time for sharing or archival
  • Automatic activity history logging across all commands
  • Each domain command doubles as both a logger and a viewer
  • Commands

    Domain Commands

Each domain command works in two modes: **log mode** (with arguments) saves a timestamped entry, **view mode** (no arguments) shows the 20 most recent entries.

    | Command | Description |

    |---------|-------------|

    | `gitignore check <input>` | Log a check operation such as verifying whether specific patterns exist in a `.gitignore` file. Track pattern coverage and identify missing ignore rules across projects. |

    | `gitignore validate <input>` | Log a validation entry for syntax checks, duplicate detection, or pattern correctness verification. Record whether the gitignore file meets standards and any issues found. |

    | `gitignore generate <input>` | Log a generation task for creating new `.gitignore` files from templates. Track which language/framework templates were used and what patterns were included. |

    | `gitignore format <input>` | Log a formatting operation for organizing, sorting, or grouping gitignore patterns. Record how the file was restructured and the improvement in readability. |

    | `gitignore lint <input>` | Log a lint result identifying redundant patterns, overlapping rules, or dead entries. Useful for keeping gitignore files clean and maintainable across repos. |

    | `gitignore explain <input>` | Log an explanation entry documenting what specific patterns match and why they are included. Build a knowledge base of gitignore pattern semantics and edge cases. |

    | `gitignore convert <input>` | Log a conversion task such as migrating patterns between formats or adapting ignore files from one VCS to another. Record source and target formats. |

    | `gitignore template <input>` | Log a template operation for creating or customizing reusable gitignore templates. Track template creation for specific tech stacks or team conventions. |

    | `gitignore diff <input>` | Log a diff result comparing gitignore files across branches, repos, or versions. Record patterns added, removed, or modified and the reason for changes. |

    | `gitignore preview <input>` | Log a preview entry for reviewing what files would be ignored before committing changes. Useful for dry-run checks to avoid accidentally ignoring important files. |

    | `gitignore fix <input>` | Log a fix operation for removing duplicates, correcting syntax, or adding missing patterns. Track what was broken, the root cause, and the resolution applied. |

    | `gitignore report <input>` | Log a report entry summarizing gitignore audit results, pattern coverage stats, or cross-repo consistency findings. |

    Utility Commands

    | Command | Description |

    |---------|-------------|

    | `gitignore stats` | Show summary statistics across all log files, including entry counts per category and total data size on disk. |

    | `gitignore export <fmt>` | Export all data to a file in the specified format. Supported formats: `json`, `csv`, `txt`. Output is saved to the data directory. |

    | `gitignore search <term>` | Search all log entries for a term using case-insensitive matching. Results are grouped by log category for easy scanning. |

    | `gitignore recent` | Show the 20 most recent entries from the unified activity log, giving a quick overview of recent work across all commands. |

    | `gitignore status` | Health check showing version, data directory path, total entry count, disk usage, and last activity timestamp. |

    | `gitignore help` | Show the built-in help message listing all available commands and usage information. |

    | `gitignore version` | Print the current version (v2.0.0). |

    Data Storage

All data is stored locally at `~/.local/share/gitignore/`. Each domain command writes to its own log file (e.g., `check.log`, `lint.log`). A unified `history.log` tracks all actions across commands. Use `export` to back up your data at any time.

    Requirements

  • Bash (4.0+)
  • No external dependencies — pure shell script
  • No network access required
  • When to Use

  • Verifying gitignore pattern coverage when setting up new repositories or onboarding new tech stacks
  • Logging template generation operations to track which frameworks and languages were configured
  • Auditing gitignore files for redundant, overlapping, or dead patterns that need cleanup
  • Comparing ignore patterns across branches or repositories to ensure consistency
  • Building a searchable archive of gitignore fixes, explanations, and conversion records
  • Examples

    # Log a check operation
gitignore check "node_modules pattern present in .gitignore, but .env is missing"

    # Log a template generation
gitignore generate "Python project — added __pycache__, .venv, *.pyc, dist/, *.egg-info"

    # Validate a gitignore file
gitignore validate ".gitignore has 42 patterns, no duplicates, syntax OK"

    # Log a lint result
gitignore lint "Found 3 redundant patterns: *.log overlaps with logs/, debug.log redundant"

    # Record a fix
gitignore fix "Removed duplicate *.log entry from line 15, added missing .env.local pattern"

    # View all statistics
    gitignore stats

    # Export everything to JSON
    gitignore export json

    # Search entries mentioning Python
    gitignore search python

    # Check recent activity
    gitignore recent

    # Health check
    gitignore status
